Economy car rental in Toronto
Economy car rental in Toronto starts with eight cars from C$ 38 a day, all petrol, all automatic, and the keys reach you rather than the other way round — we deliver to any address in Toronto and to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM).
What Economy Car Rental in Toronto Includes
Nothing bigger, nothing diesel, nothing manual.
Seats, Engines and Power Across the Class
- Five seats: Toyota Yaris, Kia Soul, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent and Mazda Mazda2 carry five, along with the Mitsubishi Mirage — seven of the eight in total.
- Four seats: only the Chevrolet Spark seats 4, so a family of five needs one of the other seven cars.
- Smallest engine: the Mitsubishi Mirage at 1.2 L and 78 hp, the least powerful car in the class and the cheapest on the page.
- Largest engine: the Kia Soul at 2.0 L and 147 hp, the strongest of the eight.
- Mid-range: the Toyota Yaris (1.5 L, 106 hp), Mazda Mazda2 (1.5 L, 110 hp), Chevrolet Spark (1.4 L, 98 hp) and the three sedans — Kia Rio, Nissan Versa and Hyundai Accent — at 1.6 L with 120–122 hp.
The 1.2 L Mirage is the least powerful car here, but power only really tells on a Highway 407 ETR merge or a long climb — in city traffic the smaller engine is the easier car to place in a tight parking spot.
What Every Car in the Class Gives You
The class is uniform where it counts: petrol only, automatic only, front-wheel drive only, and every car comes clean with a full tank. Fuel is full-to-full — you get the car full and return it full, and anything missing is charged with a refuelling service fee as set out in the rental agreement; no pre-paid tank option exists on this page. Regular petrol runs at about C$1.75 a litre in Toronto, so a small hatchback is a cheap car to keep fed on a week of short hops.
The delivery address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed — that is how the class reaches you, wherever in the city you are staying.
Choosing a Model for Economy Car Rental in Toronto
The spread is wide for one class: C$ 38 to C$ 86 a day, five hatchbacks and three sedans, every one petrol and automatic.
All Eight Models Side by Side
| Model | Body | Seats | Engine | Power | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Mirage | Hatchback | 5 | 1.2 L | 78 hp | C$ 38 |
| Toyota Yaris | Hatchback | 5 | 1.5 L | 106 hp | C$ 50 |
| Kia Soul | Hatchback | 5 | 2.0 L | 147 hp | C$ 63 |
| Chevrolet Spark | Hatchback | 4 | 1.4 L | 98 hp | C$ 66 |
| Kia Rio | Sedan | 5 | 1.6 L | 120 hp | C$ 74 |
| Nissan Versa | Sedan | 5 | 1.6 L | 122 hp | C$ 74 |
| Hyundai Accent | Sedan | 5 | 1.6 L | 120 hp | C$ 75 |
| Mazda Mazda2 | Hatchback | 5 | 1.5 L | 110 hp | C$ 86 |
The cheapest is the Mitsubishi Mirage at C$ 38 a day; the most expensive on this page is the Mazda Mazda2 at C$ 86 a day. In our experience the rate rarely decides it; the body does.
Hatchback or Sedan for the Trip You Have Planned
Take a sedan — Kia Rio, Nissan Versa or Hyundai Accent — for airport runs with luggage; take a hatchback for short city hops and tight parking. The Kia Soul is the odd one out — hatchback body, 2.0 L and 147 hp, the most powerful car in the class.
Range is not the constraint on a day out. If you are heading to Muskoka or Blue Mountain for a weekend with four people, book the sedan early — there are only three of them among the eight. For two travellers doing short hops between Downtown Toronto and North York, a hatchback is the easier car to live with, and the Chevrolet Spark at 4 seats suits a couple with city-only plans.
Matching the Car to the Season and the Road
Winter changes the shortlist more than the price does. Engine size barely matters in traffic — the 78 hp Mirage keeps up with downtown flow without effort. It matters on a merge: the 1.6 L sedans and the Kia Soul pull away from an on-ramp with less hesitation, which is worth the extra rate if your route includes Highway 407 ETR or a run out to Pearson.
Booking Economy Car Rental in Toronto with a Manager
We do not run a self-service checkout: the delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. Nothing is locked in until that conversation happens.
How the Booking Is Agreed
With Rent-Trip the delivery address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, and only then does the reservation become final. Union Station, Mississauga, North York, Scarborough and Vaughan sit inside the same delivery area, so an address there needs no special arrangement. Anything beyond those places is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.
What the Rental Agreement Sets Out
The deposit, insurance excess, delivery fees and any discounts are set out in the rental agreement, not quoted as figures here — and the same document carries the fuel rule below. The car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank; otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in that agreement.
- Fuel policy: full-to-full on every economy model, petrol only — no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty option is offered on the site.
- Deposit and excess: the amounts sit in the rental agreement, which you read before the keys change hands.
- Discounts: weekly from C$ 228 and monthly from C$ 798 are the only longer-booking rates we publish — daily × 6 and daily × 21 respectively.
- Driving in Ontario: visitors here for less than 3 months drive on a valid licence from their own province, state or country; from another country for more than 3 months, an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from that country is required, and it cannot be obtained in Canada.
- Car documents: insurance must be in place and the ownership permit carried as the original or an exact copy; the legal minimum driving age in Ontario is 16.
The minimum age, the young-driver surcharge, the cards accepted and the territory limit are agreed when booking — they are not fixed on this page, and no figure for them appears here. Read the fuel clause before the keys change hands: full-to-full is the only option we offer, so a pre-paid tank is not on the table. One more thing worth settling in the same call — whether the car may cross into the United States, since most vehicles hired in Canada can, but only with written permission from the rental point, and without it the trip breaches both the agreement and the insurance.
Where Economy Car Rental in Toronto Delivers
Rent-Trip delivers to any address in the city and to all three airports, and the address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
When the Address Is Outside the Area
Delivery beyond the places listed above is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.
Crossing Into the United States
Without written approval the trip breaks both the agreement and the insurance, so ask before you plan a border route. A passport is needed at the crossing. Winter tyres are not compulsory in Ontario; Quebec requires them from 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered cars, and a car plated elsewhere is not covered by that rule.
Fuel and the Hand-Over
The car arrives clean with a full tank and must go back full — full-to-full is the only fuel option we offer, so a pre-paid tank is not on the table. Refuelling costs and the service fee for a missing tank are set out in the rental agreement. Regular petrol sits at about C$1.75 a litre, which makes a full tank on a 1.2 L Mitsubishi Mirage a modest line in any trip budget.
Documents for Economy Car Rental in Toronto
A guest visiting the province for less than 3 months can drive on a valid driver's licence from their own province, state or country. Anyone arriving from another country for more than 3 months needs an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from their own country — and it cannot be obtained in Canada, so it has to be arranged before departure.
Every driver here must also be able to show insurance for the car and carry the ownership permit, either the original or an exact copy. The legal minimum age to drive in the province is 16, though the minimum age for hiring, any young-driver surcharge and the cards accepted are agreed when booking — they are not fixed by law and we do not quote them as figures here.
What to Bring to the Hand-over
- Driving licence: a valid licence from your own province, state or country for stays under 3 months in Ontario.
- International Driver's Permit: required for visitors from another country staying more than 3 months; arrange it at home, not in Canada.
- Insurance and ownership permit: Ontario requires the driver to have insurance for the car and to carry the registration document, original or exact copy.
- Fuel clause: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank — full-to-full is the only option we offer.
Rules That Affect the Paperwork
- Alcohol: criminal liability from 0.08 (80 mg per 100 ml of blood); the 0.05–0.079 warn range brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension, an 8-hour course and a C$250 fine for a first offence.
- New drivers: drivers 21 and under, and holders of G1 or G2 licences, must show zero alcohol.
- Winter tyres: not compulsory in Ontario; in Quebec they are required from 1 December to 15 March for vehicles registered there, hire cars included, with a fine of C$200–300, and cars plated in other provinces are not covered by that rule.
Read it before the keys change hands, particularly the fuel clause. Without written permission the trip breaks both the agreement and the insurance, and a passport is needed at the border. Ask about it when the booking is agreed, not at the crossing.
Long-Stay Economy Car Rental in Toronto
Every model in the class — from the C$ 38 Mitsubishi Mirage to the C$ 86 Mazda Mazda2 — carries the same weekly and monthly ladder: weekly from C$ 228, monthly from C$ 798.
What a Month of Driving Changes
Longer bookings are agreed with a manager like any other — the address, date and time are fixed before the reservation is final, and the rental agreement carries the deposit, excess and delivery terms.
Common Mistakes with Economy Car Rental in Toronto
- Leaving the IDP until arrival: an International Driver's Permit for a stay beyond 3 months must be obtained in your own country, and it cannot be issued in Canada.
- Assuming the tank is pre-paid: full-to-full is the only fuel option here, so the car goes back full or the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged under the agreement.
- Skipping the border question: most cars hired in Canada may cross into the United States, but only with permission from the rental point, and a passport is needed at the crossing.
What to Settle Before the Keys Change Hands
Read the rental agreement for the deposit, the insurance excess, the delivery fees and any discounts — none of them is a figure on this page. Confirm the fuel clause, since full-to-full is the only option offered. Ask about the minimum age, the young-driver surcharge, the cards accepted and the territory limit, all of which are agreed when booking rather than fixed in advance. And if the route touches the United States, raise it in the same conversation: written permission from the rental point is what keeps the trip inside both the agreement and the insurance.
