Documents and licence rules for Ford car rental in Bangkok
A foreign visitor collecting a Ford here needs two documents: a home driving licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Citizens of ASEAN countries are the exception — they drive on their national licence, with no permit attached. The same rule covers both the Everest and the Mach-E, so there is no model-by-model paperwork to worry about.
Bring the passport you travelled on, your home driving licence, the International Driving Permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name for the security hold — the amount is set out in the agreement, not quoted here. The minimum age to drive is 21, and the conditions that apply to drivers under 25, as well as those for premium classes, are set out in the same agreement.
The penalty for driving without a valid permit is a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim on a car driven by someone who cannot show one.
Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB. Read the Thai document, ask the manager about any clause you cannot follow, and check the named driver before you sign.

Arriving at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang
BKK sits at Racha Thewa, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, about 25 km from downtown, and handled 62,902,183 passengers in 2025. DMK is closer in — 222 Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, 20.5 km from Democracy Monument on the straight and 27.4 km by road — and moves 31,650,816 passengers a year, 19,407,387 of them domestic. Both are covered by our delivery, and the address you give the manager is the one we work to. If your flight lands late, say so when booking — the delivery time is part of what gets agreed, not something we assume.
What to have ready for the hand-over
- Passport: the main driver's passport, current and matching the name on the booking.

Driving away from the airport
Thailand keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, including both of our Fords. That is the first thing to get used to at the exit, not the last. The car comes clean with a full tank, and hire runs from one day. Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car; first-class cover for damage to the car itself, and the excess, are set out in the rental agreement. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so keep to the signed limit from the first kilometre. If anything about the delivery time changes, message the manager — the arrangement is agreed when booking, and it is easier to move before the car is on its way.

Traffic keeps to the left in Thailand and every car is right-hand drive, so the first thing to adjust to behind the wheel of a Ford is your position in the lane. Speed limits, expressway tolls and camera fines all follow Thai rules, and the car you collect is registered here.
Speed limits and the fines behind them
- Built-up areas: 80 km/h in Bangkok and other municipalities — the limit that applies to most of your city driving.
- Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h, rising to 120 km/h on the motorways (M7, M9) and 110 km/h on the expressways.
- Elevated sections: 100 km/h where the road runs above street level.
- Camera fines: issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a photo from a gantry reaches you through us.
- Alcohol: the 20 mg/dl threshold applies to drivers under 20, temporary-licence holders and drivers without a valid licence for the class.
Tolls on the way out of the city
The urban expressways run by EXAT — Chaloem Maha Nakhon, Si Rat and the rest — take cash or an Easy Pass tag, and M-PASS tags are interchangeable with Easy Pass, though one car carries one tag only. A short hop on the expressways sits around ฿50–100 for a passenger car. Motorway 7 toward Pattaya is a separate road: 149.3 km long, with nine payment points, and from the Lat Krabang entry a passenger car pays ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 all the way to Pattaya. Motorway 9, the outer Kanchanaphisek ring, uses M-Flow — no barrier, a camera reads the plate and the bill follows.
Parking and where not to leave the car
Malls are the easy answer for parking: CentralWorld gives two hours free, then ฿20 an hour, and ฿50 an hour after six; ICONSIAM gives two hours free, charges ฿30 for the third hour and ฿60 an hour after seven; Terminal 21 Asok gives three hours free. Central Bangna offers six hours free, and Esplanade Ratchada, PARA Pinklao and Central Festival Eastville are free outright. Kerbside parking is a different matter — yellow-and-white and red-and-white kerbs are no-parking zones.

The same document carries the security hold on a bank card in the main driver's name, and the minimum driver age of 21 — conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement too.
