What is not in the price

• Ferry tickets: the Raja Ferry crossing from Lipa Noi to Don Sak is paid separately — ฿640 for a four-wheeled car and ฿200 per passenger.
• Fuel: the tank leaves full and comes back full; island pumps take cash far more readily than cards.
• Fines: traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so they reach you after the trip rather than during it.
• Security hold: a bank card in the main driver's name is used for the hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.

Four people travelling light can stay in Comfort: the Honda Civic at ฿1,000/day, the Honda Accord and Nissan Teana at ฿1,400/day all seat five with a 1.8–2.0 L petrol engine and automatic transmission. The deciding question is often luggage rather than budget, so count the cases before the seats.

The whole fleet is automatic, which matters on the left-hand side of the road with right-hand drive: you keep your left foot free and your attention on the mirror. Book the class that matches your passenger count rather than the cheapest daily rate — upgrading a class for a 208.9 km mainland leg costs less than a second car.

Raja Ferry Port carries the car from Lipa Noi to Don Sak; the fare, by Surat Thani provincial order, is ฿640 for a four-wheeled car, jeep, van or pickup and ฿200 per passenger, paid separately from the rental. Sailings at 05:00–06:00 and 12:00–16:00 are the peak windows — when the deck fills, the operator puts on an extra sailing. In the holiday period 30 December – 30 April extra sailings are added when there is a queue of cars.

Not every operator on the island lets a car onto the ferry at all — most forbid leaving Samui, and the ones that allow it agree the crossing with the driver in advance.

Licence, IDP and minimum age

Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without an IDP. The minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement. Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — so carry both documents in the car, not in your suitcase.

Driving rules you will actually use

Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90–120 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on motorways; the island has no motorway and no divided four-lane road, so the figures you meet there are 80 and 90 km/h. All passengers wear seatbelts, including the rear row. Children under 6 must ride in a child seat to the TISI standard, and anyone below 135 cm needs a belt or a special seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000. The alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences, with up to 1 year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine or both — and refusing the test counts as an admission.

High season, low season and the price gap

High season runs 20 December – 31 March, low season 1 April – 19 December. If your dates land there, reserve the class you actually need rather than the class you would settle for.

Rain, floods and the months that punish a long drive

The climate norm for 1991–2020 puts the heaviest rain between October and December: October 294.9 mm over 15.8 rainy days, November 444.6 mm over 16.5, December 263.1 mm over 11.6. Mid-October to early December is when low-lying road sections flood and the asphalt turns slick. The dry window is February–April, with February the lightest month at 64.3 mm and 4.3 rainy days.

What the crossing costs and who allows it

The ferry tariff for the Don Sak–Lipa Noi route is set by provincial order — ฿640 per vehicle and ฿200 per passenger. Electric and hybrid cars sit in a separate vehicle category in the booking form, and that price is not shown in the static page. Most island operators refuse to let a car leave Samui at all — one of them states it plainly: a breakdown or an accident on the mainland gets expensive. Others allow it only on longer bookings, from two weeks, for example towards Krabi, and at least one company says the exception exists but has to be cleared with a manager before the booking.

Before you commit to the crossing

• Documents in the car: the square blue tax voucher with a hologram on the windscreen must be current — its year follows the Buddhist calendar, Gregorian plus 543.
• Fuel: fill up before the pier; island stations sell E20, 91 and 95, and most take cash only.
• Timing: the 05:00–06:00 and 12:00–16:00 sailings are the busiest, so a car space is not guaranteed on the hour you want.

Insurance and support with car rental in Koh Samui for Krabi

Cover on a Koh Samui rental car begins with the compulsory policy every registered vehicle carries, and the rest is settled before you leave the island. What follows is what we can state plainly, and what belongs in the rental agreement rather than in a headline.

What is included and what sits in the agreement

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Read that document before you drive off — the excess clause matters more than the daily rate when something goes wrong 208.9 km from the pier.
