Traffic in Georgia drives on the right, and the urban speed limit is 60 km/h. A short automatic hatchback is the easiest way to learn those two rules without also learning a clutch.

Georgia sets 60 km/h inside built-up areas and 20 km/h in residential zones, rising to 90 km/h outside towns and 110 km/h on motorways. Seat belts are required for the driver and front passengers; rear belts are not compulsory by law. Phones work only through a headset or hands-free, with both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 travel in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, or on the lap of a passenger aged 16 or over in the back. Children under 6 cannot be left alone in a parked car. The alcohol limit is 0.3‰, and speeding by 15–40 km/h carries a 50 lari fine, over 40 km/h — 150 lari, a phone — 30, a belt — 40, running a red light — 50, an unpaid parking session — 50, driving without a licence — 500, with a 20% discount if paid within 10 days. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March.

Winter, mountains and the limits of a compact car

Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and mountain sections of the Georgian Military Highway close at the Jvari pass during avalanche risk. Fuel costs stay predictable: petrol sits at 4.06 lari per litre and diesel at 4.76, roughly 17% more; every car on this page runs on petrol. Parking is zonal and street-based — from 1 lari per hour after the first 15 free minutes, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or kerbside terminals. An unpaid session is a 50 lari fine, and a wrongly parked car can be towed for 150 lari plus 20 lari per day of storage, so read the zone sign before leaving the car.

Street parking

Street parking starts from 1 ₾ an hour after the first 15 minutes free, and you pay through the Tbilisi Parking app or at street terminals. Underground car parks in the centre are a separate arrangement: Freedom Square runs around 2–3 ₾ per hour, Rike about 7 ₾ per day, and Orbeliani Square roughly 1–2 ₾ per hour, with Galleria Tbilisi charging about 2 ₾ for the first hour.

Fuel: petrol only, and the tank rule

Every hatchback on this page runs on petrol, which sat at 4.06 ₾ a litre at the last check, while diesel was 4.76 ₾ — about 17% more expensive, though none of our cars need it. We hand the car over with a full tank and ask for it back full; that full-to-full policy is the only fuel option we offer, so there is no pre-paid tank to buy and no empty-return rate to negotiate. If the car comes back short, the missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Roads themselves cost nothing here. Georgia's international and domestic highways carry no tolls, no vignettes and no transponders, and the Road Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that this remains unchanged with no plans to introduce charges. That includes the Rikoti section of the E60 east–west route — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes — which opened on 29.12.2025 and is still free to drive. Day trips that fit a hatchback

• Gudauri: 121 km, a resort at 2,200 m by the Jvari pass; the ski season runs from early December to mid-April, and winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March.

The mountain road, honestly

The S3 — the Georgian Military Road — runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, and its highest point is the Jvari pass at 2,379 m. The upper sections take landslides and snow, and the pass is closed when there is avalanche risk; a 23 km bypass with a 9 km tunnel has been under construction since 2021. Stepantsminda, better known as Kazbegi, is 153 km from Freedom Square — usually two to two and a half hours to Gudauri when the road is open. Check the road before you set out in winter, and keep the tank above half.

Crossing into Armenia

A rental car goes to Armenia only with our driver. The main border point is Sadakhlo — Bagratashen, about 80 km south of Tbilisi, 70 km by road; the second is Ninotsminda — Bavra. Tbilisi to Yerevan is roughly 280 km, four to five hours with the border. The land border with Azerbaijan is closed to passengers, so a hatchback cannot cross there at all.

Documents and rental agreement

Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention. If your licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic script, bring an IDP or a notarised translation.

• Fuel policy: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank; anything else is charged as missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee under the agreement.
• Insurance: compulsory third-party cover for Georgian-registered cars is not yet in force — the government put its introduction into the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named. Comprehensive cover for the car, driver and passengers (CDW / Super CDW) is available as an option; theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard insurance.
• Unpaid parking is fined 50 ₾, and traffic fines start at 50 ₾ for speeding by 15–40 km/h.
• Winter tyres: compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, with chains on at least two front wheels in government-designated zones under special weather conditions.
• Border crossings: a car leaves Georgia only with our company driver and only for Armenia; a self-drive car stays in the country.

Read the agreement before you sign it, not at the airport with the engine running — the fuel clause and the insurance option are the two lines that decide what you pay at return, and both are written there in plain terms.
