• Winter and shoulder season: a hybrid needs no charging plan at all between November and March.
• Booking: all three models carry the DGT environmental badge through the Spanish rental fleet, so the Girona ZBE does not restrict them.

Fuel: what a Peugeot burns and where to fill up

• Diesel (Gasóleo A): 1.922 EUR per litre in the province, 1.932 on the coast, at 266 and 59 stations — no Peugeot on this page takes it.
• The electric pair: the e-208 and e-2008 skip fuel entirely and recharge from a socket or a public charging point instead.
• Full-to-full: we hand the car over with a full tank and ask for a full tank back — the missing fuel and a refuelling fee are set out in the rental agreement.
• Watch the coast premium: coastal stations average a fraction above the provincial figure, so filling up inland before you reach the resort strip is the cheaper habit.

Tolls and the Girona low-emission zone

The AP-7 corridor from La Jonquera down past Girona to Vila-seca has been toll-free since 1 September 2021, and the C-32 Maresme stretch from Montgat to Palafolls, the usual run from Barcelona towards Blanes and Lloret de Mar, lost its barriers on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021. The roads a Peugeot actually uses here carry no barrier. What is left of the Generalitat's toll network is the C-16 towards the Cadí and the C-32 south of Barcelona towards Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € in category 2 — neither sits on a Costa Brava route. Catalonia keeps discussing a return to charging for fast roads, by vignette or by use, but nothing has been decided.

The Girona low-emission zone, the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, has been in force since 15.09.2025. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; cameras read the plates, so there is no sticker to display, and a Spanish rental car carries the badge, which means no restriction applies to it.

Driving rules worth knowing before you set off

• Speed on the motorway: 120 km/h on the autopista and autovía — the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33.
• Speed on ordinary roads: 90 km/h on the carretera convencional, which covers the GI-614, GI-682, C-260 and the rest of the coastal and inland links.
• Parking in Girona: the zona blava charges 1.20 € per hour on working days, 9:30–13 and 16–20, capped at two hours, or 2.40 €; the zona verda for non-residents is the same 1.20 € per hour with the same two-hour ceiling.
• Parking in Lloret de Mar: the Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at around 15 € per day from 23 June to 11 September and free outside that window, while the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride offers 200 spaces free for stays over 12 hours with a free bus ticket into the centre, from 15 June to 15 September.

One practical note: the ZBE runs on working-day hours only, so a Saturday morning run into Girona is unrestricted in any case.

• Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) to Lloret de Mar: 89.6 km, about 75 minutes via the C-32, C-31 and B-10.

The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme barriers came down the same night. On the routes you will actually drive here — the AP-7, the C-32 to Blanes and Lloret, the C-33 — there is nothing to pay at a barrier. The tolls that remain in Catalonia sit to the south, on the C-32 towards Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell (Vallcarca 8.42 €, Cubelles 5.03 €, category 2), and inland on the C-16 towards the Cadí tunnel. Neither is on a day trip along this coast.

Picking the Peugeot for the road, not the map

The coast roads are where the model matters. A seven-seat Peugeot 5008 at €80 a day is the one to take if the whole group is moving together; for two people, the €22 108 leaves the budget for the fuel.

One thing worth knowing before you plan a Cap de Creus day: the road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus carries access restrictions through the season, with timed windows on set dates rather than free passage all day. Check the window for your date before you commit to the drive — the car gets you there, but the last stretch has its own timetable.

Documents, insurance and the rental agreement

Spain requires every car on the road to carry compulsory third-party cover, and that cover is already inside the rate you see on this page. What changes between bookings is the paperwork around it — your licence, the deposit, the excess and the fuel rule on return.

Licence and ID

• EU/EEA licence: valid in Spain for as long as it has not expired — an IDP is not needed.
• Non-EU licence: the DGT advises getting an International Driving Permit before the trip and carrying it with your passport and your national licence.
• Non-Latin script: a licence in Cyrillic, Arabic or characters is valid in Spain only with an official translation into Spanish, or if it follows the Geneva or Vienna convention model — in practice that means an IDP or a certified translation.
• Six-month rule: six months after you take up residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid and has to be exchanged.

Insurance and the excess

• Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: compulsory third-party cover, included in every booking by Spanish law — it pays for damage to other people, not for you or the car.
• CDW: an option that removes your liability for damage to the car itself after a collision, except for the excess.
• THW: the same idea for theft and vandalism, again except for the excess.
• Excess (franquicia): the amount you pay yourself when there is damage — it is printed in the agreement.

The compulsory cover has fixed limits: €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury and €15,000,000 for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2, as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. The Girona ZBE runs from la Devesa to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, Monday to Friday, 7:00–20:00 on working days; a rental car carrying the DGT environmental badge is not restricted, and the cameras read plates rather than stickers. And if your plans stretch to Cap de Creus, the road to the Far de Cap de Creus is closed to traffic on set days through the season — check the calendar before you build a day around it.
